The Generalist's Perfect LinkedIn Profile
Optimizing your LinkedIn profile to showcase your true value as multi-potential professional
As a generalist who has navigated multiple career transitions, I know firsthand how challenging it can be to showcase our diverse skillset without looking "unfocused." After years of experimentation and helping other generalists optimize their profiles, I’m sharing the tips that have helped me, and other generalists, to our unique value on LinkedIn.
The Generalist's LinkedIn Dilemma
Here's a common scenario: You've worked across marketing, project management, and customer success. You've led cross-functional teams, managed budgets, and driven innovation. But when you try to capture all of this on LinkedIn, it either looks scattered or gets lost in translation.
Let me show you how to solve this.
Your Headline: Your Value Statement
Forget traditional job titles. As a generalist, your headline should focus on your impact across areas. Here's the formula I use:
[Broad Role] | [Key Impact Areas] | [Unique Value Proposition]
Examples:
Business Strategist | Connecting Marketing, Tech & Operations | Building Cross-Functional Solutions"
Innovation Leader | Product, Marketing & Customer Experience | Transforming Ideas into Growth
These headlines embrace breadth while showing purpose.
About Section: Tell Your Story
This is where you set the narrative. Here's my proven structure:
Opening Hook (2-3 sentences)
State your broad impact
Name your key domains
Highlight your unique approach
Value Proposition (2-3 bullet points)
Quantify cross-functional achievements
Show how your diverse background creates unique solutions
Highlight your ability to connect dots
Areas of Impact (Listed clearly)
Group your skills into 3-4 main categories
Show how they complement each other
Demonstrate the breadth of your expertise
Call to Action
What kind of opportunities interest you?
How can people best connect with you?
Experience Section: Connect the Dots
Instead of listing jobs chronologically, show growth across domains. For each role:
Start with Impact
Lead with your biggest cross-functional achievement
Show how you brought different areas together
Quantify results where possible
Highlight Integration
Demonstrate how you connected different departments
Show how your varied skills created unique solutions
Emphasize cross-functional leadership
Skills in Context
Don't just list skills - show how they worked together
Demonstrate adaptability
Highlight quick learning and implementation
Example:
Senior Business Partner, ABC Corp
Led cross-functional initiatives combining marketing automation, customer insights, and product development:
- Integrated customer feedback loops across 3 departments, increasing retention by 25%
- Developed and implemented new project methodology, reducing delivery time by 30%
- Built bridges between technical and non-technical teams, launching 5 successful products
Skills Section: Strategic Organization
Don't just add every skill you have. Instead:
Create Skill Clusters
Group related skills together
Prioritize skills that show breadth
Include both technical and soft skills
Get Strategic Endorsements
Ask colleagues from different departments to endorse specific skills
Focus on skills that demonstrate your ability to work across functions
Build a balanced profile of endorsements
Recommendations: Multi-Perspective Proof
Request recommendations that highlight different aspects of your work:
Ask a manager to speak about your adaptability
Get peers to highlight your cross-functional collaboration
Have direct reports discuss your leadership across areas
Activity Section: Demonstrate Thought Leadership
Show your broad expertise through:
Share insights that connect different fields
Comment on trends across industries
Write articles that showcase your ability to synthesize information
Engage with content from various domains
Projects Section: Showcase Integration
Create dedicated project entries that demonstrate how you:
Brought together different departments
Applied varied skills to solve problems
Led cross-functional initiatives
Achieved measurable results
Next Steps
Review your current profile with fresh eyes
Identify your key impact areas
Rewrite your headline using the formula above
Restructure your About section to tell your story
Update one experience entry using this approach
Share your profile with trusted colleagues for feedback
Contact me if this seems overwhelming and you need help
My parting words for you: your diverse experience isn't a weakness, it's your superpower. Your LinkedIn profile should confidently showcase how your broad perspective creates unique value. 🐙💪
